Orofacial Myofunctional Specialist (OMS) Certification
The Orofacial Myofunctional Specialist (OMS) designation identifies a clinician who has completed an advanced educational pathway in orofacial myofunctional therapy and has demonstrated competency through formal assessment administered by the Airway Circle Board of Examiners.
OMS certification reflects completion of structured coursework, guided mentorship, and evaluation of clinical understanding related to airway-centered, function-based care. The designation serves as an independent measure of advanced preparation within the clinician’s existing professional scope of practice.
What Does It Mean to Be an Orofacial Myofunctional Specialist (OMS)?
The OMS designation indicates that a clinician has met established educational and evaluative standards that exceed entry-level training in orofacial myofunctional therapy.
While certification is not a licensure requirement, OMS status reflects a structured and validated process designed to assess clinical comprehension, application of theory, and responsible practice within one’s licensed discipline.
Certification Rigor and Educational Threshold
The OMS credential is intentionally structured as a high-threshold certification.
Candidates are required to complete two comprehensive educational programs totaling over 100 hours of formal instruction. Competency is evaluated throughout both programs through required coursework, including written assessments, case-based analysis, and applied assignments.
Certification is not granted upon course completion alone. Candidates must complete all required coursework and then proceed through a formal application and clinical evaluation process.
Required Educational Programs
Eligibility for OMS certification requires successful completion of both Airway Circle educational programs, including all required coursework, assignments, and assessments embedded within each program.
These programs are designed to evaluate knowledge, clinical reasoning, documentation, and application over time.
Foundations of Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy
This program serves as the foundational requirement for OMS eligibility and establishes the core principles necessary for clinical application.
The program includes:
- 12 weeks of structured instruction
- Over 60 hours of course material
- 4 additional monthly clinical integration meetings
- 12 months of guided mentorship
Competency is assessed throughout the program and includes:
- 139 quiz-based assessment questions
- Three (3) case-based evaluations
- Required applied coursework
Core assignments include:
- Literature review
- Patient photo documentation
- Full orofacial myofunctional evaluation
- Clinical recommendations development
- Comprehensive treatment planning
- Sleep tracking and analysis
- Patient flow chart development
These assignments are designed to evaluate clinical understanding, documentation accuracy, and the ability to translate theory into structured patient care.
